kibble toppers - what are they and do i need them? {Part 3 of 4}

Kibble toppers are popping up everywhere...

Many pet owners use kibble toppers, but all toppers are not necessarily equal. Like everything else, some types are better than others, and your furry friend will thank you for doing some research before you buy.

It's important to note that some brands of kibble lack essential nutrients (we won't name any names here!), which is why toppers can be beneficial.

Think about eating the same thing every day, over and over again, for the rest of your life. Sounds a bit boring, doesn't it?

Seriously, mom! Dry kibble again??

Adding toppers to your dog’s food makes their meal more exciting, AND it provides beneficial nutrients. Natural additives to consider putting in your dog's food are:

  • Raw or lightly steamed vegetables like broccoli, carrots, zucchini, yellow squash or bell peppers
  • Raw or lightly cooked meats or eggs - Please make sure they are organically sourced and have no antibiotics
  • Oils such as salmon oil or coconut oil
  • Digestive enzymes such as yogurt or cottage cheese

What are Kibble Toppers?

Wedding cake toppers, mattress toppers, salad toppers… I will admit, I had no idea there was such thing as dog food toppers!

Since being in the pet industry, I have been enlightened by the idea of dog food kibble toppers. Many of the toppers for your dog's food are freeze-dried. They add nutrients to food that your pet might not get from just plain kibble.

Add a topper to your dog's kibble, and they will fall in love with their food!

Thanks for the yummy meal, mom!

Kibble toppers that we recommend are:

K9 Natural

One of K9 Natural’s popular products is their line of tripe toppers. They have lamb tripe and beef tripe, along with other meats like chicken and beef. These are filled with natural probiotics, high quality meat proteins and calcium and phosphorous. They are grain free and freeze dried, and made to sprinkle over your dog’s kibble!

If you use tripe, you really, really, really love your pet! Tripe is made from stomach lining and smells absolutely horrific! However, it is extremely nutritious, and dogs go crazy for it.

The Honest Kitchen Proper Toppers

The Honest Kitchen Proper Toppers are made from 100% human grade ingredients. There are no by-products or preservatives, and contain no corn, wheat, soy or GMO ingredients.

Each flavor is made with 5-6 high quality dehydrated dog food ingredients. The beef and fish toppers are made with beef or fish, egg, blueberries, chard, apple and pumpkin. The turkey and chicken toppers are made with free-range turkey or chicken, blueberries, chard, apple and pumpkin.

YUM!

Halo Mix'n Mores

Halo Mix’n Mores from Halo Pets contain extra nutrition and protein! They have no grains, no rendered meat, no dehydration (which kills enzymes and nutrients), and no artificial ingredients, preservatives or colors.

These mixers are made with whole digestible proteins, and they're freeze-dried, which preserves the cellular structure, just like fresh meat. They come in 2 different flavors: Chicken and Beef.

The company recommends wetting this nutrition booster before feeding it to your dog to help bring out the aroma and flavor.

Stella & Chewy's Meal Mixers

Stella & Chewy’s makes a lot of awesome products, and one of our favorites is definitely the meal mixers. They are made with raw-minimally processed ingredients, organic fruits and veggies, and 95% of the meal mixer is meat, organs and bone! That’s exactly why our pups need!

There are 4 different protein blends available: Beef, chicken, turkey and salmon and cod. All of the proteins are grass-fed, cage-free, or wild-caught. Just how we like them!

Tylee's

Tylee’s isn't technically a topper, but you can mix it in with your current kibble, or serve it on its own.

This food is made with human-grade ingredients and it’s fresh! Tylee's food is exactly like a topper that you would prep at home for your dog, without the hours it takes to make it.

There are no fillers and it is grain-free, which makes it great for dogs with sensitive tummies! You can find it in 4 different flavors: beef, turkey, chicken and pork. It comes frozen, and after you defrost the bag, it will last 10 days in the refrigerator.

All of these products come from reputable brands, and based on our experience and meetings with company representatives, we recommend all of them.

Next time you think your pup is getting bored with their food, try mixing it up a bit and put some toppers on there. Just make sure it’s not a mattress topper!
